In order to prepare the main project and the technical bases for the safety documentation for the construction of the eastern tube of the Karavanke Highway Tunnel, we carried out geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations, monitoring of the zero condition of springs and flows, as well as the chemical and isotopic composition of springs and in the tunnel, and monitoring of methane in boreholes in permocarbon shales. On the basis of the hydrogeological investigations, the impact of the new tube on the quantity and quality of the aquifers crossed by the new tunnel was evaluated, the appropriate hydrogeological basis for the safe construction of the tunnel was prepared and a risk assessment for groundwater contamination was carried out.
