IRGO Institute of Mining, Geotechnology and Environment

The Institute of Mining, Geotechnology and Environment was founded in 1962 as the Mining Institute of Ljubljana (RIL). Its predecessors were the Faculty Mining Institute and the Institute for Separation at the Trbovlje Machine Works. The main activities of the Institute at the time of its establishment were: scientific and research development, expert services, equipment certification, reviews, design, etc. The Institute was active in the fields of underground and surface mineral extraction, mechanical-process engineering and beneficiation, mining surveying and mine exploration.

The decline of the mining industry in Slovenia and changes in the services market in the 1990s dictated a structural reorganisation of the Institute. In 1992, the Institute was renamed to its present name and started to run the updated programmes referred to in its current name. In 2012, the Institute of Mining, Geotechnology and Environment celebrated 50 years of existence, which places it in a small group of professional institutions and similar institutions in Slovenia with a half-century of tradition.
