Description of Project

The Markovec tunnel is a twin-tube road tunnel located on the Koper – Izola high-speed road. The high-speed road in the twin-tube two-lane tunnel runs from the cliff on the Markovec slope ( Koper side) up to the end of the Pivol stream valley (Izola side). The right tunnel tube (Koper –Izola direction) is 2144 m long, while the length of the left tunnel tube (Izola – Koper direction) is 2174 m. The transverse gradient of carriageway is from 2.5% to 3.5%. Each lane is 3.50 m wide with extra width of 0.35 m. Overall width of the useful opening clearance is 7.70 m. Vertical carriageway clearance height is 4.70 m. Construction is underway and the tunnel will be opened to traffic in spring 2013.

Technical Features

The tunnel passes entirely through flysch bedrocks. The tunnel tubes will be constructed by using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method with the size of excavation profile 92 square metres and vertical carriageway clearance height 4.7 metres. The crown will be excavated by using impact hammers and by blasting. At the tunnel entrance of both tubes on the Koper side (east portal), there will be a mostly backfilled gallery, and on the right side, there will be a partly open structure on pillars. On the right side of the right tube, there will be a plateau for a power supply station. At the tunnel exit on the Izola side (west portal), there will be a cut-and-cover structure with the same clearance as the tunnel itself, which will be backfilled and therefore not visible. Escarps on both sides of the open alignment in the vicinity of the tunnel will be protected with gravity walls. Horizontal plates will be embedded in front of the portals of both tunnel tubes (false portals). On the left side of the tunnel tube, there will be a plateau for a power supply station.
